Judge rules that a wedding dress designer’s family can’t legally use her name

The designer of an iconic wedding dress, Hayley Paige, has been denied her right to be part of her own name by a New York court. Hayley’s family, who own a business called Hayley Paige and Associates, were involved in a legal dispute with a third party over the use of the name and, in the last several years, some court records indicate that the dispute was litigated over the use of the use of the name Hayley Paige by a marketing company.

This particular dispute was settled out of court. The fact that Hayley Paige and Associates is known as a wedding dress business rather than a marketing firm, may have been a factor in the fact that it was excluded from this settlement.

According to court records obtained by the New York Times, it appears that Hayley Paige and Associates has continued to use its name in communication with wedding dress buyers, but, this does not have the backing of her family.

Lawyer: The company wants to change the defendant’s name from Hayley Paige to ‘Hayley Paige’

Defendant: Can’t afford to update

The designer explains that it was her decision to allow wedding dresses to be made with the name “Hayley Paige” on them. She says that she believed that she had made enough years of using her name to keep it going. When contacted by PopCulture for comment, she said, “It was a lot of work and money, and at the end, my husband and I split and we did our own thing.”
